The first team squad has now been decided with still about 5 players trying to break into it. AFC LANES v LOWER KINGSWOOD - The first game of the new season.
Lanes started apprehensively today and it showed in the passing, trying to rush rather than maintain possession but it was a positive start. With very attacking wing players Lanes was choosing the left hand side more today with Pete running down the wing and hitting the box with a few crosses. The first 15minutes was definitely going Lanes way with pressure mounting on the Kingswood back four but Lanes finding it very hard to work a shot on target.
Lanes had a few great chances but were cynically hacked down and managed to not cause any trouble from the resulting free kicks. Kingswood had won a few corners against Lanes but never really caused much problems until a mistake from Lanes saw the ball nicked and placed into the bottom corner giving the advancing keeper no chance to get down to make the save. 0-1
Kingswood reacted better from the goal and applied more pressure to Lanes forcing errors all over the pitch and stretching the midfield. As the midfield stated to tire, Kingswood stole the ball again from a loose pass and played the ball down the wing. A couple of missed tackles and no blocking of the cross saw it expertly delivered onto a Kingswood striker, who headed the ball from 8 yards out, onto the crossbar and into the goal. 0-2
The only other real incidents this half were a very bad tackle on a Lanes midfielder Terry who had to be subbed off through injury and a couple of Free Kicks against Lanes which were dealt with easily.
Lanes started better the second half with more passing and better "final play" to get into the box. It wasn’t long before a chance was created with Richard being brought down inside the penalty box from a meandering run. Up stepped Mike who blasted it full pelt at the keeper who stuck out a hand and put it onto the crossbar and over for a corner. After the game Lanes striker Mike said he did not want to hit it that high. It left Kingswood to a counter attacking style which that used very effectively, if not sometimes, they should have held the ball up to waste some time. Lanes continued to make mistakes letting Kingswood counter attack and winning corners again which was relieving the Lanes pressure that they were under.
Ten minutes left and Lanes went three at the back with Steve pushing further up the pitch, which worked very well and some neat interchanges between Pete, Luke and Steve released Steve down the wing to deliver a great cross low and hard leaving SuperSub Victor to slot home from 4 yards out. 1-2
Another attack saw a blatant penalty decision turned down for AFC Lanes, which was much worse than the first, but the rule of only getting one penalty decision go your way on Sundays, seemed to stay true.
With five minutes left and Lanes pushing for the equaliser, a mistake put the ball straight to a Kingswood striker who took one touch and bent it into the left hand corner, another great finish. 1-3
Lanes were beaten with only having one other shot the whole half which was saved by the Kingswood Keeper who played well today. Lanes need to get their shooting boots on this season! Too many players had a bad or quiet game today and this will need to change next week.
