League Game - 6th Oct 2013

Away to Leatherhead is always a tough fixture and the two clubs have a bit of history now.  LEATHERHEAD FC v AFC LANES - The pitch was in great condition and the weather perfect for a good game of football.

Today Lanes mixed it up a bit playing some key players in different positions and started very well in the first 10 minutes both Newton and Martyn had chances that were harder to miss than score. But the next 10 minutes belonged to Leatherhead putting Lanes under pressure by winning corner after corner it was not long before they broke the deadlock by squeezing a header in near the post. 1-0

The next goal followed quickly with Leatherhead playing some great football and crossing the ball which was chested down and half volleyed into the goal. 2-0

Luckily Lanes seemed to wake up and apply pressure all over the pitch and start creating chances, the first of which came from a great run by Richard who beat 3 players but was taken down in a mistimed challenge as he got into the box, penalty given. Pete then expertly dispatches the penalty into the goal net making it 16pens14scored in his Lanes career. 2-1

Lanes then started to play the ball round and Mike's new role in the midfield helps dispatch the ball to the left which was played down the wing and crossed over by Martyn, with Newton at the front post causing havoc the keeper made a mistake and allowed Dan to slot it home. 2-2

5 minutes before the half and Lanes broke again causing pressure on the Leatherhead defence another cross by Martyn saw the ball flicked on by Terry then flicked towards goal by Dan only for a Leatherhead defender to get the final touch sending it into the goal. 2-3

Leatherhead came out from the half time break with all guns blazing and started to put Lanes under pressure which seemed to be being handled by Daryl and Tipton and the back who were player out of their skins since the two early goals against them. Leatherheads best chance came from a low cross and a miss-hit shot which flicked of a Lanes player on the six-yard box but the Lanes keeper reacted quickly to save it and then save the rebound in a double save which would have really changed the game if it went in.

Terry in midfield seemed possessed today and was running non-stop from box to box which reminded of his Cup Final appearance on this ground where he got cramp in both legs due to his constant running. Today was no different (except the cramp) and his work rate was amazing.

Lanes started to control the game a bit better and before long got another break through with Dan Murry closing a lost cause down forcing the keeper to clear it into his face and setting him up with an easy tap in. 2-4

Very good performance today especially to come from 2-0 down, Luke and the other boys at the back looked solid and some great individual performances all over the pitch.
