League Game - 3rd February 2013

The stop/start of winter has got the Lanes squad not playing enough football, so today was going to be tough. KEW TUDOR AFC v AFC LANES - The rest of the league was not playing and this is Lanes game in hand.

The game started with a nice flow and Lanes had a strong team out so it was not long before they started creating chances. Everything seemed to be straight at the keeper or just wide of the goal in fact the chances are hard to write down as there were so many but the final touch today was poor which we can only put down to a lack of playing time.

KEW's best player by far was the striker causing all kind of problems with his movement and as Lanes started to seek the goal, was starting to get the better of the back four, only to be met by some early saves from the Lanes keeper and great defending. The best move of the game came from KEW with a break down the right and the ball then was cut across the box to an unmarked KEW player who finished with an easy header from six yards out. 1-0

KEW had another easy chance missed as all the striker had to do was lob the keeper but his finish let him down. The second half Lanes came out fighting and started wearing down KEW, the manager saw this and used the "roll-on-roll-off" to full extent replacing tiring players with fresh legs. Although KEW only had one attack plan, Lanes continued to apply the pressure and from a corner saw the ball cleared only a far as Daryl who with his back to goal finished with a stunning bicycle kick. 1-1

Lanes goalkeeper Jon was now playing as sweeper as Lanes were giving their all to the win. Players started tiring, with the team stretched and others players taking the work load, two injuries happened. Terry who's second half was very effective and impressive picked up a hamstring, also the equally impressive Daryl had to leave the pitch with an injury and they were then replaced by players from the bench.

The clock was running out and Lanes created a final chance that fell to top scorer Martyn, many thought he may have squared it across the box to the unmarked Lanes player but he selected to shoot and was saved by the KEW keeper. Disaster then struck with Lanes going for the win a lucky bounce put through the winger who then cut the ball back and finshed by an unmarked KEW player. 2-1

The gulf in class was huge in this game, Lanes ability and play was much better than KEW, but just shows football it is about the chances you finish and the score at the end of the game, not about how well you played football. Hopefully a lesson learned by all as Lanes push on for the title!
